What disturb me as I grow older are the seeming inevitabilities of lives -- most of all, my own. The Buddhists' endlessly repetitious Sea of Samsara, I suppose: the dark tossing sea.
We struggle on, and at the end of a long passage, when we thought we had left behind the past, we find the past again: the same shapes forming before us as we fight toward them, shapes coalescing like a Polaroid picture to our eyes, gradually, magically, fatally. Until ourselves come clear, again -- but to our disappointment.
We circle to it in the dark, to the past. The fossils that we find are our predecessor selves, and our present selves, eerily, exactly, repeated.
-- Lance Morrow, Heart: A Memoir
